Lions Lookout Walk - Korung National Park - Lesmurdie
This trail in Korung National Park is categorised as a difficult walk as it has some very steep and rough sections. We found it manageable, especially with walking poles, even after some very wet weather. The 4km trail starts at a small carpark at Lions Lookout off Welshpool Road in Lesmurdie where you are immediately rewarded with vistas across the Perth Coastal Plain. Using our trail notes from the Shire of Kalamunda, (as we find trail markers on Shire of Kalamunda walks

Helena Pipehead Trail - Gooseberry Hill
It was a chilly 2 degree morning when we hiked this trail but after breakfast at nearby Aunty Cath's Cafe it had warmed up a little. It's only a few minutes drive from the cafe along the very narrow and windy Helena Valley Road to the trailhead. We carpooled from the cafe as I had heard that parking was limited. The road literally runs out opposite a private residence and there is room for about 8 cars here - hopefully they have parked to allow a turning circle so you don't

Kangaroo Trail - Walyunga National Park
Walyunga National Park was quite badly impacted by fire in early 2021 but is well on the way to recovery. We have visited this park many times to explore the various trails. The Kangaroo Trail is a short 4km trail which includes the 1km Walyunga Aboriginal Heritage Trail (River Trail). Although it doesn't have the steep climbs of the Kingfisher and Echidna Trails there is still about 1km of steady uphill climbing. The remainder is about 1km downhill (what goes up must come

Woodlands Walk Trail - Yanchep (Yandjip) National Park
Yanchep National Park is always beautiful at any time of the year. In early winter there were still a few splashes of autumn colour to offset the greens leading down to the lake. The Woodlands Walk Trail and many other trails all start behind the Yanchep Tea Rooms. The shared path for the trails crosses the road and then, after a short walk, the Woodlands Trail splits from the other trails as you take the path to the right. If you get to the camping ground you have gone too

Kittys Gorge Trail - Serpentine
Kitty's Gorge Trail is an 8 km trail that follows Gooralong Brook and the Serpentine River. As a there and back trail it will be 16km return, unless you car shuffle and park at either end. We started from Jarrahdale Cemetery, where there is limited parking, but you can also start from the carpark at the Falls in Serpentine National Park (entry fees apply). Walking from Jarrahdale Cemetery has the advantage of following the brook downstream so the trail descends gradually.

Baldwins Bluff and Serpentine Falls
Baldwins Bluff is a challenging 6 km loop trail starting at Serpentine Falls then heading steeply uphill before levelling out on the ridge and offering stunning views across the valley to Serpentine Falls on one side and across the Swan Coastal Plain on the other side. We completed this trail at the end of the Kitty's Gorge one way hike from Jarrahdale to Serpentine Falls. There is a turn off from the Kitty's Gorge Trail before you get to the Falls. The trail starts with an

The Salvado (Pilgrim) Trail - Bells Rapids to Walyunga
Walyunga National Park and Bells Rapids are both firm favourites and this walk combined the two. Being uncharted territory we joined Off the Beaten Track for a guided hike for this one, setting off at 7.30am from the car park at Bells Rapids (yes it was only just light but at least there was no problem finding a parking space!) We crossed the Bells Rapids Footbridge and although the water was flowing there were not too many rapids yet - more rain is needed for that to happe

Yaberoo Budjara Heritage Trail - Lacey Road to Loch McNess, Yanchep National Park
This beautiful walk takes about 2 hours at a good pace and is just over 5km one way. The City of Wanneroo organises yearly guided walks for this section of the Yaberoo Budjara Heritage Trail led by local Noongar, Derek Nannup. The advantage of a guided tour is that after meeting at Wangi Mia in Yanchep National Park you are transported by mini bus to Lacey Road to start the trail. Otherwise you would need two cars to access both ends of the trail - or walk there and back

Yaberoo Budjara Trail - Burns Beach Road to Neerabup Road
One sunny morning with rain forecast we set out to explore the Yaberoo Budjara Heritage Trail from Burns Beach Road. We regularly pass this trail and look at the dirt road going up the hill and think it looks a little boring but today we discovered that this road is an access road for vehicles and the trail starts on the western side of the Yaberoo Budjara sign. The map at the trail head provides information for this section of trail winding through Neerabup National Park

Piesse Brook Interpretive Trail to Rocky Pool - Kalamunda National Park
This interpretive trail follows Piesse Brook in Kalamunda National Park to Rocky Pool before returning the same way, a round trip of 3.4 km taking around an hour all up. Rocky Pool is a great place to stop off and enjoy the moment, have a trail snack or if the water is low in summer perhaps even a paddle. Starting from Schipp Road off Hummerston Road in Piesse Brook this trail follows Schipp Road which is a wide, mostly compacted dirt trail. Piesse Brook is evident at the b

Mundaring Dam and Mundaring Weir Precinct with Weir View Loop - Minderinjy
Mundaring Weir is one of the world's greatest engineering projects. Completed in 1903, the Weir was the start of the water pipeline, designed by C Y O'Connor, that pumped water 700 kilometres to the Kalgoorlie goldfields. This is a popular day trip destination and there is plenty to fill your day. Mundaring Weir is located in natural bushland in the Perth Hills and there are a number of bushwalking trails you can enjoy before settling down for a picnic and exploring the herit

The Dell to South Ledge - Beelu National Park - Mundaring
This is a longer 8-9 km walk through Beelu National Park starting from The Dell and following a loop trail via South Ledge picnic area where you can detour to the Golden View Lookout. It is a lovely forested walk with views down the Helena River Valley and across to Mundaring Weir and C.Y. O'Connor Reservoir. Parts of this trail follow the Munda Biddi Cycle Trail, the Winjan Track and the Bibbulmun Track respectively. We parked at The Dell off Mundaring Weir Road. The Mu

Victoria Dam Trail
The Victoria Dam Trail is is a gentle 7.2km loop through lovely bush in Korung National Park with the added interest of the dam and it's history. There were very few walkers on the occasions we walked the trail so we almost had the place to ourselves. The entrance to the dam is off Masonmill Road in Carmel. There is a small car park with additional roadside parking at the entrance gates on the road to the reservoir. On weekends when the gates are locked you will need to wal

Fred Jacoby Park and the Portagabra Track, Beelu National Park - Mundaring
We returned to Mundaring for our mid winter bush walk. Previously we had tried to walk the Portagabra Track but due to a lack of information and maps we walked the O'Connor Trail instead. This time we had completed a bit of research and found a review of the Portagabra Trail which provided a much needed guide. (Thank you). It took us 80 minutes to complete this trail which is a 3.5 km loop through pristine bushland. After having this trail on our walk again list for some t

John Forrest National Park
John Forrest National Park was established in 1900 and has been a popular picnic and walking spot ever since. There are large picnic areas with lots of tables scattered around the main area near the car parks. There are plenty of barbecues available and there are bigger gazebos for large groups. There is a centrally located toilet block opposite the Ranger's office. There is also a tavern there. The picnic benches are in heavy demand from about 11am onwards - before th

Wetlands Trail - Yanchep (Yandjip) National Park
The Wetlands Walk Trail is a 2.6km loop trail around Loch McNess in Yanchep National Park. If you walk down the path from the McNess House Visitor's Centre to the lake you can turn right or left and follow the edge of the lake to find the trail. This trail is represented by a bulrushes icon on the trail markers. We did the trail in a clockwise direction heading past the old boat and raindrop sculpture in the picnic area. If you do this as a regular walk it would be interest

Glen Brook Walk Trail - John Forrest National Park
This blog was originally written for the 2km loop trail around the dam but in August 2023 park management extended this trail with a 2.5km trail up the gully beyond the dam. The new 4.5km trail has been renamed the Glen Brook Walk Trail and we have now included the extension in this blog. You can choose to walk the shorter loop around the dam or extend to the more challenging hike beyond the dam. It was a sunny winter's day after a wet week so we headed to John Forrest Nat

Walyunga National Park
This is one of my favourite places to hike. Normally we go in winter when the river is full and you can hear the water rushing along as you hike Syd's Rapid Trail. This time we went in Autumn and it was a different experience. The river is still very pretty even though the water was so much lower than previous visits. I did miss hearing the water rushing by and the path didn't quite feel like the river walk I am used to. Walyunga is open between 8am and 5pm daily. Please
